Parents' Guide

1. What is AURCAM, and what is your child doing on it?
AURCAM is a social media app. People can use it to:
- Share posts and stories
- Photos and videos. Stories disappear after 24 hours.
- Reels
- Short videos; these can reach a wider audience through the Explore feed.
- Direct messages
- One-to-one and group chats, voice messages and video calls.
- Map
- Seeing friends' locations on a map. By default this is friends only, and it can be switched off entirely.
- Audio and video rooms
- Group voice chat (6 people, or 16 with Plus).
- Streaks
- A run of days on which two friends have shared with each other without a break.
The two features that deserve the most attention are the map/location and direct messages. Both can be restricted from Settings.
2. The minimum age and our rules
- AURCAM is not available to anyone under 13. A date of birth is requested at registration.
- If we learn that an account holder is under 13, we close the account and delete the data.
- Where your country sets a higher age limit, that limit applies.
- We apply zero tolerance to content involving the sexual abuse of children: the content is removed, the account is permanently closed and the incident is reported to the competent authorities.
- Pornographic content and the advertising of sexual services are prohibited.
3. The privacy settings we recommend (step by step)
We suggest going through these settings on your child's account together. Each one is reached from the Settings menu:
- Private account: Privacy → Private account → on. Only people your child approves can see their content.
- Location: Privacy → Location → Off (or, at most, “friends only”).
- Messages: Privacy → “Who can message you” → Friends only.
- Comments: Privacy → “Who can comment on my posts” → Friends.
- Tagging: Privacy → “Who can tag me” → Friends.
- Online status: Privacy → “Show my online status” → off.
- Footprint: Privacy → “Show my footprint on my profile” → off.
- Two-step verification: Security → on. It prevents the account from being taken over.
4. Location sharing — the single most important setting
Location is the most sensitive piece of data where child safety is concerned. On AURCAM, location sharing is off by default and only works once the device permission has been granted.
- Turning it off completely: Settings → Privacy → Location → “Off”.
- Turning it off at device level: on iPhone, Settings → AURCAM → Location → “Never”; on Android, App info → Permissions → Location → “Don't allow”. This route is the more definitive one.
- Ghost mode: even with location switched on, one tap hides your child from the map; timed options return to the previous setting when the time is up, rather than to a default.
- Footprint: this shows the countries and cities visited on the profile. It is off by default, and we recommend leaving it off.
5. Risks to be aware of
- Contact from strangers
- Limiting messages to “friends only” removes a large part of this risk.
- Revealing a location
- Even the background of a photo can give a location away. Watch for details such as a school uniform or a street sign.
- Peer bullying
- This can happen through comments and messages. Show your child where the blocking and reporting tools are.
- Sextortion
- It usually starts with someone asking for intimate images shortly after making contact. Give your child one clear message: “never send them, don't be afraid, tell me straight away”.
- Scams
- Gift cards, in-game currency or promises that they have “won a prize”. Stress that passwords and verification codes must never be shared with anyone.
- Screen time
- The streak system can build a daily habit. You can set limits using your device's own screen time tools.
6. Conversation starters for your child
- “What would you do if someone you don't know messaged you?”
- “Before you share a photo, ask yourself whether you would mind a stranger seeing it.”
- “If anyone asks you for a photo, or threatens you — you can tell me without any embarrassment. I won't be angry.”
- “Don't share your password, not even with your friends.”
- “Shall we check together who can see your location?”
- “If you see something that upsets you, you can report it; reports are anonymous and nobody sees who reported them.”
7. Warning signs
- Sudden tension while using the phone, or hiding the screen.
- Disrupted sleep, being online through the night.
- Withdrawing socially, or a sudden change in their circle of friends.
- Talking about people you don't know — or the opposite, becoming markedly more secretive.
- Unexpected gifts or movements of money.
None of these signs proves anything on its own, but each is a good reason to start a conversation.
8. Reporting a problem and closing an account
- In-app reporting
- “Report” in the ⋯ menu next to every post, comment, message and profile. Reports are anonymous.
- Urgent and serious situations
- safety@aurcam.com — write URGENT in the subject line.
- Reporting an account belonging to someone under 13
- privacy@aurcam.com — we close the account and delete the data.
- Deleting an account
- In the app: Settings → Privacy → Delete account. It asks for the password and cannot be undone.
- A copy of the data
- Settings → Privacy → Download my data.
As a parent you can send requests about your child's data to privacy@aurcam.com. Once we have verified your identity, we answer requests under KVKK and the GDPR within 30 days.
